Concept note
Eco Screen Fest
In the face of increasing environmental challenges, the need for widespread awareness and education on ecological issues has never been more significant. To address this, we propose a four-day educational film festival at the intersection of environmental issues and human rights. We believe it is important to spotlight the interconnectedness of environmental issues and social equity, using film and other forms of participatory art, in order to raise awareness and inspire collective action for both the planet and its people.
In this context, Eco Screen Fest aims to:
Educate and inform through a curated film selection consisting of documentaries, short & long films that not only raise awareness towards environmental issues but also offer insights into how we have the power to shape the complicated relationships between climate change, social disparities, and the urgent need for climate justice.
Raise awareness on diverse environmental issues, from climate change and biodiversity loss to sustainable living practices and explore the intersectionality of environmental issues and social justice, emphasising the impact of climate change on vulnerable communities worldwide.
Empower people to take tangible steps towards being more environmentally responsible through highlighting positive initiatives and solutions, as well as organising discussions, workshops, and sharing resources.
Through this festival, we aim to address a series of environmental themes, such as:
- Climate Change;
- Biodiversity Conservation;
- Pollution and Waste Management;
- Sustainable Agriculture;
- Environmental Justice;
- Climate-induced Displacement;
- Environmental Racism;
- Community Resilience and Adaptation;
- Global Solidarity for Climate Action;
- Links between environmental issues and human rights;
- Fast Fashion (and the invisible price of labour);
- Global interdependencies.
The festival will include screenings of documentaries, short films, and narrative features that explore the chosen environmental themes. Each screening will be followed by Q&A sessions with filmmakers and/or experts in order to facilitate deeper understanding and discussions.
In addition to film screenings, the festival will feature:
- Panel discussions with environmental experts and activists;
- Workshops on sustainable practices and lifestyle choices;
- Interactive exhibitions showcasing eco-friendly innovations and initiatives.
Eco Screen Fest envisions an experience that goes beyond entertainment, fostering a sense of responsibility and collective action. Through film and educational activities, this festival aims to start conversations, inspire change, and contribute to a more sustainable and just future for both the planet and its people.
Eco Screen Fest is an inclusive event for all. This means access to all activities is free of charge, all our facilities are accessible for people with disabilities and all films will have both Portuguese and English subtitles.
